Annual Notifications from the Environmental Health & Safety Office |
Asbestos Management: In accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), Phillips Academy notifies the community that some buildings on campus have asbestos-containing materials (ACM). The Academy maintains a written plan for the management of ACM. This management plan enables the Academy to control exposure to any ACM through a systematic approach of monitoring, employee training, record keeping, and periodic re-inspections. The plan is located in the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Office and is available for review upon request. Academy maintenance and custodial personnel have received special training to qualify them to conduct routine activities around asbestos. EH&S Office personnel have been trained in monitoring the condition of asbestos-containing materials and in the proper handling of accidental releases of asbestos fibers should the material become damaged. EH&S Office personnel monitor the condition of ACM by performing periodic surveillance and re-inspections.
Hazardous Material Removal: Throughout the year, the Office of Physical Plant conducts renovations, some of which require the removal of hazardous materials such as lead paint, asbestos, and laboratory waste. While we prefer to schedule major renovation jobs and handle these materials during times when students are not on campus, a number of repairs must be completed during the school year, including major construction projects in unoccupied buildings and minor procedures such as the containment and removal of asbestos during routine maintenance (e.g., repair of a leaky valve). Parents should know that Phillips Academy complies fully with all state and federal regulations regarding the reporting and removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials to ensure the safety of Phillips Academy students, faculty, and staff. All employees or contractors who work on such material are appropriately licensed.
Pesticide Management: Some buildings on campus are periodically treated with Sentricon Termite Baiting Systems in response to the presence of termites. These are subsurface treatment systems. Phillips Academy selected this treatment method to reduce risk and hazards to our students, faculty, and staff. Phillips Academy maintains and submits an Integrated Pesticide Management Plan as required by Massachusetts regulations, with the goal of minimizing exposure risk to our students, faculty and staff through our management procedures.
For further information regarding environmental health and safety, please contact Bronwyn Boyle, Environmental, Health & Safety manager, at 978-749-4528.
