February 20, 2012

Happy Presidents’ Day and greetings from the (still) unseasonably warm Andover Hill. You may notice that this edition of the Parent Bulletin is longer than usual. We have included a variety of notices that we hope will help you and your children prepare for the end of the term. Less than three weeks until spring break!

Travel over Spring Break

For Spring Break, Phillips Academy will be offering bus transportation to NYC with stops in Hartford and Darien, Connecticut. Buses depart on Friday, March 9, and return on Sunday, March 25. Cost is $90 one-way and $150 round-trip.

Shuttles to Boston’s Logan Airport on Friday, March 9, at 8 a.m. also will be offered at a cost of $30. We will NOT offer return shuttles at the end of break. Private taxi and limousine services are available. See Flight Line for transportation specials.

Forms and further information are available on the Parent Portal’s “Student Life” tab under the Dean of Students section. Please contact Claudia Scofield at cscofield@andover.edu or 978-749-4175 for more information.

In Touch with…
Reverend Anne Gardner

For those in our community who are people of faith, the month of February brought an unusual abundance of blessings.

Showing a penchant for surprise, Barbara Chase selected Friday, February 3 as her last Head of School Day. This unorthodox choice allowed a number of students from the Muslim Student Association to attend Friday prayers at the mosque in nearby Methuen, an opportunity rarely available given the constraints of our traditional school calendar.

The 13th of this month felt a bit luckier than usual for members of the Hindu Student Union as they used the vacation day to attend the opening of “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu,” the latest Bollywood movie to hit the big screen. This trip, generously funded through a grant from the PSPA, offered those in attendance a chance to enjoy a vibrant part of Hindi and Indian culture.

As the end of the month approaches, all members of the various faith clubs will gather to observe Mardi Gras, the traditional celebration that precedes the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Buoyed by jazz music and King Cake, this has long been one of the most popular multi-faith gatherings of the year. The following day, the school will follow an academic schedule adjusted to accommodate a midday liturgy for the imposition of ashes.

The enlightening and entertaining performances of last month’s Jewish Cultural Week-end set high expectations for this month’s events. We anticipate that March will be just as exciting.

Winter Term Billing

This is a reminder that student tuition and fee invoices were sent out February 1, 2012 and you should have received the statement by this time. If you have not received an invoice, please send an email to, billing@andover.edu notifying us that you have not received an invoice. Please include the student’s name, ID number and your billing address so that we can check our records and send you a replacement bill. Payment is due in full by March 1, 2012.

The registrar’s office will not be open to clear students for registration between March 16 and March 26. Any student whose account has not been paid in full will not receive a schedule on-line and will not be cleared for registration.

To avoid delays at the Andover Bookstore, please ensure that your child’s BlueCard is fully funded prior to his/her return on March 25, 2012.

Advanced Placement 2012 Registration Information

AP Exam registration began February 1 and ends March 8. The cost is $87 per exam. Students taking AP or other relevant classes should obtain an AP Student Bulletin and Registration Form from the Dean of Studies Office and register as soon as possible. The exams are given May 7-18. The AP bulletin details the exams offered and the schedule for each exam. Since these exams are expensive and time consuming, students should consult with teachers or advisors if they are unsure about whether to take an exam.

After the March 8 registration deadline, the cost of each AP increases $20. NO REFUNDS will be given after April 30, 2012.

To see further details and to find answers to questions about the AP registration process, please contact Debra Colombo at dcolombo@andover.edu.
