Year-end Happenings
It’s that time of year, when performances of every sort abound. Last week, at the all-school meeting the faculty talent show featured the thrilling teaching fellows, a singing chemist, a piano tribute to a senior daughter, a banjo-cello duo with a social conscience and (back by popular demand) the fabulous Man SLAM. This week, the students brought life to the chapel stage with singing, rapping, rocking and a Lady Gaga medley by “unaccompanied minors.” To get in on the fun, you may access the programs through the PA Community tab on the Parent Portal.
In other arts news, the theatre and dance department mounted “Earthworks” in early May and will present a main-stage production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” the last weekend of the term. Music department-sponsored recitals and concerts headlined by individual vocalists and instrumentalists and by ensembles including the Academy Orchestra, Band and Jazz Band will have packed the weekend schedule for more than a month. (An amazing number of seniors – 22 – are performing recitals!) Art department spring shows began with the Art 500 exhibit in the Gelb Gallery and will culminate with the mounting of works from courses across the art curriculum.
Phillips Academy’s athletes have proven themselves champions, whether they have won the big tournaments or not. Congratulations to everyone for their notable sportsmanship. And bravo to the following varsity teams, which have captured their respective titles:
Boys’ Track and Field, New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC)
Girls’ Track and Field, NEPSAC
Ultimate, New England Prep School Ultimate League (NEPSUL)
Boys’ Volleyball, New England Prep Schools Founding Four Championship (NEPSFFC)
By the time you receive this bulletin, we will be in final preparation for the spring term Andover-Exeter weekend contests here on campus. From girls’ varsity lacrosse on Friday night through softball, boys’ varsity and jv lacrosse, baseball and track and field on Saturday afternoon, our teams will enjoy the home-field advantage. Meanwhile, crew, tennis and ultimate will take the Big Blue banner on the road.
Shipping/Storage
Phillips Academy has partnered with Collegeboxes to provide a solution for students who need to ship or store their belongings over the summer. Collegeboxes will pick up items, place them in storage and deliver them to the student’s dorm room just before the beginning of school. Collegeboxes offers online account management and 24/7 customer service so you can sign-up and get answers when it’s convenient for you. Please go to www.collegeboxes.com and choose Phillips Academy Andover from the drop-down menu for more information. We recommend signing up as soon as possible.
Download a Senior Class Photo for Free
A photo of the 2010 senior class posing on the steps of Samuel Phillips Hall is available online for parents to download free of charge. The photo is posted in the Academy’s new SmugMug account. Actually, we’ve posted six different versions of the photo, and parents are free to download one or all of them. To view the photos, go to: phillipsacademy.smugmug.com/School.
