From the Dean of Studies Office
We send our best wishes as the school year draws to a close. While we do not yet know the exact format of our 2020–2021 master schedule or the precise method of course delivery—other than the fact that every course will have an online component—we are proceeding with our usual course selection process. We will be in touch if any changes are necessary.
Term 3 grades and reports: Term 3 final student grades and reports will be available on The Hive on Friday, June 12.
Returning students and course selection: Returning students worked with their advisors around midterm to select courses for fall term. Please review next year’s course plan with your child as soon as possible. Students wishing to make changes should email Ken Shows, assistant dean of scheduling—and send a copy of that request to their academic advisor—by Friday, June 19. Things you should know:
- Advisors work closely with students to develop course plans, receiving support from current teachers, department chairs, and college counselors as appropriate.
- Students are required to list at least two alternates for term-contained courses. Course plans lacking sufficient alternates are more likely to result in an incomplete schedule for the fall.
- Five is the standard course load. Placement in a sixth course, for students who qualify, is based on space availability and Blue Book policy, and cannot be guaranteed.
- Preferences for individual teachers cannot be honored.
- The Course of Study indicates which courses are a three-term or two-term commitment. Only under very special circumstances will a student be permitted to drop the course before completing the full sequence.
- Any changes in music lessons or athletics should be resolved with those departments when the student returns to campus.
Complete your student’s registration requirements for fall: The Hive homepage shows your student’s information front and center as well as the “Required for Registration” box. As you complete tasks, they will automatically be marked complete.
- Tuition & Fees 2020—Payment deadlines depend on your payment plan. For both the one- and two-payment plan options, the first payment is due July 15. For the 10-month payment plan, each payment is due by the 15th of the month, through February 2021.
- My Family Profile 2020 and Travel Authorizations 2020—Due August 1.
- Health & Medical Insurance Info 2020—Due July 1.
- Medical Consult Required 2020—Only a few students, such as EpiPen users, will need a consultation in September.

The Workshop: Spring Capstone Presentations
| |
Seventeen Andover seniors formed the inaugural cohort of The Workshop, an immersive learning experience designed by faculty members through the Tang Institute. Students collaborated on a series of interdisciplinary projects about “Community, Class, and Carbon.”
Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2: You are invited to two days of virtual presentations, each focusing on one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in relation to a specific community. Topics include how to work toward a more environmentally educated and sustainable post-pandemic society, the care of the elderly in China through the lenses of Confucian and feminist philosophy, and a short play about young Korean-Americans interpreting the struggles of their older Korean family members.
Presentations will begin at 10 a.m. (EDT) both days. To receive information about how to sign up for these webinars, please fill out this form. To learn more about The Workshop, please visit the Tang Institute website. Our blog also features several student posts and reflections.

Advice from the Academic Skills Center
Across the country, students and teachers were thrust into quickly adapting to remote learning. Many students found ways to adopt new schedules and routines, adjustments that were often simple—like switching to paper to-do lists, writing daily tasks on a whiteboard, or setting a timer for more productivity. Others struggled with motivation and disengagement, for a wide variety of reasons.
During the summer, we encourage students and families to reflect on this time—what worked and what didn’t? What routines could you think about putting in place to be better prepared for the flexibility that may be needed over the next year? This summer, the Academic Skills Center will debut a website with resources for both students and parents. In the meantime, please view “The Struggle Is Real,” created by math instructor and learning specialist Lani Silversides, to discover a combination of strategies to maximize motivation to get things done.

From The Cubby
Interim Head of School Jim Ventre ’79 has enjoyed connecting with the Big Blue community this spring through his From The Cubby video series. The goal has been to foster positivity by recognizing students, faculty, and staff for their non sibi acts of generosity and kindness. “I hope these videos inspire and encourage us, and remind us of the strength and compassion within our Big Blue community,” said Ventre.
In addition to offering community shout-outs, Ventre also hosted a slate of guests via Zoom. More than two dozen students and adults joined From The Cubby, including Blue Key heads, student copresidents, retiring faculty members, and many others who oversee campus programs. Student activities, Community Engagement, CAMD, College Counseling, the Brace Center for Gender Studies, the Tang Institute, academics, and athletics have all been represented. Watch all seven episodes on YouTube or IGTV Instagram @phillipsacademy.
