Family Weekend Begins October 14!
It’s not too late to register here for Family Weekend, October 14–16. We look forward to welcoming families back to campus!
Family Weekend Check-In: Be sure to stop by the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library on Friday, October 14 (Noon–7 p.m.), or Saturday, October 15 (7 a.m.–noon).
Weekend Highlights
A Conversation with CAMD Family and Friends: Cultivating a Sense of Belonging at PA—Friday, October 14, 6 p.m.: The Office of Community and Multicultural Development (CAMD) welcomes you to join them as they discuss the best resources they have for your students at PA—its people. The program will begin with opening remarks from Hector Membreño-Canales, interim director of CAMD. He will describe the work CAMD does to celebrate the diverse richness of our students through daily interactions and programming that directly supports their academic excellence. You will then hear from a panel of adults from across the campus who are equally committed to supporting our students throughout their time at PA. This event is especially recommended for families of students who are ACE 9 and 10 alums, connected to Opening Blue Channels (OBC), and/or first generation to college. Attendees are encouraged to pick up dinner in Paresky Commons, bring it to the lower left dining hall, and start eating as the program begins. This event will be recorded.
“An Insider’s Guide” Series: All families are encouraged to come to campus on Friday, October 14, by late afternoon for “An Insider’s Guide” to each class—junior, lower, upper, and senior. Four separate panel discussions are planned, starting at 4 p.m.; each will be followed by Q&A. Key faculty and administrators will talk about the range of opportunities and challenges—academic, intellectual, social, and emotional—typically faced (and embraced!) by students in each grade. Each class session, time, and location is posted on the Family Weekend Schedule of Events.

Grasshopper Night Performances Will Be Simulcast
Tickets for Grasshopper Night live performances in Tang Theatre are sold out. Alternative viewing of all four performances will be available via simulcast in Kemper Auditorium and needs no ticket or reservation.
Important information for ticket holders: Tickets do not guarantee seats to the show—you must arrive at Tang Theatre in George Washington Hall 20 to 30 minutes prior to showtime to secure your seat. Doors will close five minutes before showtime, with no admittance after that—even if you have a ticket.
Quick Reminders- Teachers look forward to seeing parents during the 20-minute “Classroom Visits” on Saturday morning. Given the number of events scheduled during Family Weekend, teachers will not be able to have individual meetings with parents. Parents should connect with their child’s point person if they have specific questions.
- Students do not have classes on Monday, October 17, or Tuesday, October 18.

Learning in the World Programs 2022–2023
The Academy’s slate of domestic and international Learning in the World (LITW) opportunities for spring break (March) and summer 2023 will be announced shortly. Follow our website and Instagram for details as they are released. LITW opportunities abound throughout the school year, and we encourage all students to take advantage of as many as possible during their Andover career.
Don’t Miss the LITW Open House on Family Weekend
Come talk with faculty leaders and “Global Ambassadors” who have participated in various LITW programs on Saturday, October 15, 9–11:30 a.m., in the Tang Institute (second floor of the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library).
LITW has fostered partnerships with the Community Engagement office and academic departments to offer world-facing and place-based experiential learning opportunities. Of note are:
- Virtual Envoys Summits and GEBG Student Dialogues, which are currently overenrolled for the year.
- History 562, “Skulls, Angels, and Hourglasses” (fall course), and Art 302, “Clay and the Ancestral Pot” (spring course), which students may sign up for before each term.
One benefit of these offerings is their accessibility due to their taking place during the school year at no additional cost to families. They’re a great way to cultivate habits of global citizenship in tandem with other pursuits at Andover. Please email LITW Director Mark Cutler with any questions.

Mathematics for Human Flourishing
Join the campus community for a conversation with Professor Francis Su of Harvey Mudd College on Friday, October 7, at 7 p.m. in Kemper Auditorium. Su will help us see that math is more than just a way to describe the world, more than just a set of skills like doing arithmetic or factoring a quadratic. Math, says Su, is a deeply human enterprise that fulfills basic human longings, such as for beauty and truth, and when properly engaged, it builds virtues like persistence, creativity, and a competence to solve problems you’ve never seen before. This talk is geared toward a wide audience, especially those who do not see themselves as “math people.”

REACH Boarding: How It Works
PA boarding students are able to request overnight excuses for various leaves—visits home, visits to a friend’s, dean’s excuse, religious excuse, and college leaves—through REACH Boarding, a cloud-based student life management system.
The student creates the leave request. The leave then requires approval from multiple individuals before receiving final approved. Parents/guardians are a key part of the approval process. You will receive an email from no-reply@reachboarding.com with leave details. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the email and click either “Approve Request” or “Decline Request.” If you approve the request, it continues to the next approver and will receive final approval from either the house counselor or cluster dean. If you reject the request, it goes no further and is cancelled. Email Claudia Scofield with questions.

In the next few weeks, Parent Fund Committee (PFC) members will be reaching out to you—their fellow parents and guardians—to introduce themselves. In addition to raising critical support for the Academy, PFC volunteers serve as ambassadors to the PA parent community. Whether you would like to make a gift, have a question about Andover, or maybe just want to make a connection with a fellow parent, please engage with them. They are eager to get to know you!
Virtual Volunteer Opportunity: Parent Development is also seeking parents and guardians to join the Parent Fund Committee.
