In Touch with…
Erin Strong, Chair of the Theatre & Dance Department

Family Weekend’s performances of Grasshopper Night kick off an exciting year of theatre and dance. Grasshopper is a student-directed variety show that this year will feature acts inspired by works of art, novels, and stories.

Next, we will turn our attention to a season of plays and dance. In December, we will produce Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, directed by PA instructor Kevin Heelan. Come winter term, we will welcome visiting scholar Rachael Longo, who will create an original piece with our students. The year will conclude with a festival of one-act plays focused on social and political issues.

As part of this year’s celebration of 40 years of coeducation, Coed@40, we will highlight arts programs that came up the hill from Abbot Academy and continue to thrive. January will showcase our dance and Fidelio programs through a special performance of Dido and Aeneas.

In February, we will welcome Kayden Guest Artist Rennie Harris. Mr. Harris’s company will perform Rome and Jewels, his hip hop rendition of Romeo and Juliet. The company also will teach a variety of master classes.

The biggest highlight this year is the launch of our South Africa Arts Project. In April, we will perform an original production created by dancers, musicians, and artists. We will then tour this production to South Africa, where students will examine the country’s arts, culture, and history. Grasshopper Night is a benefit performance for this project. Donations will be accepted at the end of each show.

All of our performances are open to the public. Please keep up to date on all box office news via our theatre and dance website.

PA Directory available to families

If you are on campus this weekend, you may pick up a copy of The 2013-2014 Directory at the Family Weekend registration table. One per family, please. The Directory includes photos and contact information for faculty, staff, administrators, students and all campus offices. If you are not on campus this weekend, and would like a directory, please email adoyle@andover.edu with your name and address, and one will be mailed to you.
